History of Chiropractic

Chiropractic in Modern Times

Dr. Daniel Palmer

Dr. Daniel Palmer founder of Chiropractic Medicine

In 1895 chiropractic was founded by Daniel David Palmer of Davenport, Iowa. He was investigating the medical history of Harvey Lillard, a deaf janitor. Lillard informed Palmer that while working in a cramped area seventeen years ago he felt a pop in his back and had been nearly deaf ever since. Upon examination, Palmer found what he described as a lump that was sore to the touch. He concluded that this lump was a misalignment, which was the possible cause of Lillard's deafness. After correcting this misalignment in the janitor's spine, Lillard's hearing was restored. Lillard was reported to note that he could now hear the wheels of the horse drawn carts in the street below. After further investigation, Palmer believed he had discovered that a major source of interference to the nervous system, the vertebral subluxation, interfered with the body's regulatory mechanism, causing what he termed "dis-ease" as in "loss of ease". Shortly, after in 1897 Daniel D. Palmer went on to begin the nations first school of chiropractic, which continues to be one of the most prominent chiropractic colleges in the nation.

Hippocrates

Hippocrates of Cos, the Greek physician and father of modern day medicine, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., also published texts detailing the importance of chiropractic care. In one of his writings he declares, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases". In spite of the fact that many ancient cultures used the practice of spinal manipulation its use during the middle ages and early modern times seems to practically disappear. It reemerges in the late nineteenth century in North America and gained recognition by mainstream medicine during the 1980's.

Although the modern day chiropractic profession was founded in the late nineteenth century. Its roots can be traced all the way back to the beginning of recorded time. Writings from China (2500 B.C.) and Greece (1500 B.C.) both mention spinal manipulation, a term which modern day chiropractors refer to as adjustments, and the maneuvering of the lower extremities to ease low back pain.
